Angkor Wat History

Image
Angkor Wat lies 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi) north of the modern town of Siem Reap and a short distance south and slightly east of the previous capital, which was centred at Baphuon. In an area of Cambodia where there is an important group of ancient structures, it is the southernmost of Angkor's main sites. According to legend, the construction of Angkor Wat was ordered by Indra to serve as a palace for his son Precha Ket Mealea. According to the 13th-century Chinese traveler Zhou Daguan some believed that the temple was constructed in a single night by a divine architect. The initial design and construction of the temple took place in the first half of the 12th century, during the reign of Suryavarman II (ruled 1113 – c. 1150). Dedicated to Vishnu, it was built as the king's state temple and capital city. As neither the foundation stela nor any contemporary inscriptions referring to the temple have been found, its original name is unknown, but it may have been known as

A Monk’s life in Cambodia

Image
Let’s be honest, most of your travel albums from South East Asia will be littered with pictures of monks. Their orange garments, yellow umbrellas, and dawn/dusk processions definitely make for some picturesque photo opportunities – but there is so much more to a monk’s life than being a model for your lens. Suong is a monk at Wat Piphetthearam in Battambang and came to the pagoda when he was just a young boy. “I became a monk when I was a child and at the time my mother asked me, do you want to become a monk? I asked her that if I go the pagoda can I study, and she said yes why not! My mother said f want to go to the pagoda then you can study with the monks and if you stay with me then you cannot study. When I lived with my mother we had to do a lot of work to help my mother and earn money rather than go to school. If you live in the pagoda though you can just study everything with the monks, we also get food and somewhere to live which is really good.” Many young boys choos

Kingdom of Wonder (Angkor Temple )

Angkor Wat ( Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត or "Capital Temple") is a temple complex in Cambodia and the largest religious monument in the world, on a site measuring 162.6 hectares (1,626,000 m 2 ; 402 acres). It was originally constructed as a Hindu temple of god Vishnu for the  Khmer Empire, gradually transforming into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century. It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yasodharapura ( យសោធរបុរៈ , present-day  Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the Shiva tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction fo

Ricefields of Cambodia

Image
Rice in Cambodia is produced, mostly, during the wet season but dry season harvests are becoming more common too. The majority of Cambodians will practice traditional farming methods, when it comes to rice cultivation and this very often include the use of oxen pulling a plough and harrow. Farming the rice fields is not an easy task, and can even be nerve wracking for the first time farmer – very often, the first thought through someone’s mind is ‘are there any snakes? While there are sometimes rice paddy snakes to be found, they have a habit of leaving people alone – in fact, it is common for children to hunt them for the family dinner table! Fish are not very common in the rice fields of Cambodia anymore, which is a shame because they were once an essential part of the diet as well as being good for the local economy. There is work underway, however, to clean up the water (which is fine for snakes and rice) and reintroduce fisheries to the rice fields.

Cambodian countryside.

Image
Millions of tourists flock in Siem Reap each year to see the famous UNESCO World Heritage temples of Angkor . While these temples highlight every tourist’s visit in Cambodia , the countryside of Siem Reap tends to be overlooked and only a few chooses to explore off the beaten track and get to experience the beauty of Cambodia’s authentic rural lifestyle. About more or less five kilometers away from Siem Reap downtown area or the busy Pub Street, one can find picturesque and tranquil sceneries of villages with small native houses scattered throughout the expanse of the countryside. People are warm and they are almost all the time happy to pose for photographs. Main photography themes would be landscapes of green paddy and lotus flower fields, farmers working in the plains, amazing sunsets, and portrait opportunities of kids from the village. One of the best eco-friendly ways to discover new roads and explore new paths is to rent a mountain bike or an electric bike ( e-B
